Our Blessed Mother encountered much suffering, sorrow, and anxiety in her life, as the prophet Simeon announced at the Presentation of Our Lord. “And you yourself a sword will pierce” Simeon forewarned Mary, predicting that she would feel the effects of suffering her Son was to endure.
Our Lady lived her life in perfect obedience to God’s plan of salvation and endured moments of sorrow and anxiety from the day of the Presentation till the day Jesus died on the cross. She is the perfect image of faithfulness and devotion to Jesus. As she steadfastly remained at the foot of the Cross with her Son, she will also accompany us whenever we endure painful trials and tribulation.
Our Lady of Sorrows is often portrayed sorrowful and in tears, with seven long knives piercing her heart, often bleeding. Those seven knives symbolizes seven events from the life of the Blessed Virgin in which she suffered alongside her Son Jesus and participated in his redemptive mission.
