We currently don’t have pre-made “off-the-shelf” Catholic Travel Kit but we hope to provide such kit in the near future. We recommend creating your own instead so it’s personal, compact, and includes the devotions most meaningful to you.

Here’s a short list of items to pack into a kit:

– Small St. Benedict crucifix

– Bottle of Holy Water (we ran out of the small ones but the normal for home use is probably better so as no need to keep refilling it)

– Rosary

*Optional*

– Triptych – small foldable altar for prayer OR icon of Mary

– Holy prayer cards/relic cards or medals of favorite patron saints

– Green Scapular (Immaculate Heart of Mary)

  • Known for graces of conversion, protection, and healing
  • Does not require enrolment (**brown scapular require enrolment)
  • many people carry it when travelling for peace and protection.

–  Bible or book of Psalms or Imitation of Jesus or Mary – for meditation and reflection

** Explanation for Brown Scapular (any standard Carmelite design)**

  • Approach a priest or deacon and request the Brown Scapular enrolment.
  • The priest will pray the official enrolment blessing and place the scapular on the person.
  • After enrolment, the person may replace the scapular with a new one anytime it wears out — the enrolment remains valid for life.
  • What enrolment means
    • Entrusting oneself to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
    • Committing to live a life of faith and prayer
    • Receiving the spiritual protection associated with the Carmelite tradition
    • For travel: Once enrolled, the Brown Scapular is meant to be worn daily, including during travel.

Travel tip: Pack everything in a small pouch (you can buy this from Muji or Daiso cheaply) so it fits easily into backpack or carry-on.

After consultation with clergy, the recommended method is:

For HDB and apartment dwellers: Most households do not have access to private land. The practical and acceptable way is to break the item carefully, wrap it in newspaper and in plastic bag, and dispose of it in the household rubbish bin. This is done out of necessity and with the intention of respectful handling.

For those living in landed properties: If space permits, sacred items may be buried in the garden in a simple and dignified manner.

These steps reflect both the reverence due to sacred objects and the realities of living in Singapore’s housing environment.

Do we have to say a prayer upon disposal. Not necessary but you may do so with a simple prayer like this:

  • Heavenly Father, With gratitude for the graces once shared through this sacramental, we now return it to ordinary use. Bless our hands as we dispose of it respectfully, and keep our hearts close to You. Amen.

OR

  • O God, We give thanks for the prayers and devotion this item has accompanied. As it is now broken and laid aside, may our reverence remain in the life of faith we live each day. Guide us always toward You. Amen.

OR

  • Lord God, We thank You for the blessings we have received through this sacred item. As we now dispose of it with care and respect, may our hearts remain turned toward You in faith and devotion. Grant that all our actions be done with reverence and love. Amen.

4. Donating Statues in Good Condition

For statues or devotional items that are still in good, usable condition, parishioners may consider donating them to charitable organisations that accept household items for redistribution.

You may check directly with the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVDP) to confirm whether they are able to receive statues or devotional items.
